Authorities in Limpopo have launched an extensive search for suspects following the shocking discovery of a woman’s body wrapped in a plastic bag and abandoned under a bridge in the Waterberg District.

A passerby came across the body while praying near the Mmamatlakala bridge and immediately alerted the police.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, officers from the Tinmyne station arrived at the scene on Sunday and found the victim dressed in a red skirt, lying in the grass. While there were no visible injuries, the body was already decomposing.

The cause of death remains unknown, and a postmortem will be conducted to determine further details. Police have opened a murder case but have yet to establish the victim’s identity.

Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has ordered a full investigation, directing officers to use every available resource to track down those responsible.

Crime Trends in Limpopo

At the start of March, Hadebe presented provincial crime statistics for the second and third quarters of the 2024/2025 financial year. While murder cases rose by 2.5% in the second quarter, there was a sharp 29.5% decline in the third quarter.

Rape cases also saw a downward trend, with a 7.3% drop in the second quarter and a further 2.7% decrease in the third. Hadebe credited these improvements to intensified police operations and awareness campaigns in high-crime areas.

She encouraged continued cooperation between communities and law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of reporting criminal activity.
