The Limpopo police force is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Sergeant Leah Mosalofi Malebye, who was tragically murdered in a senseless act of violence. Authorities have arrested a 43-year-old man, believed to be her boyfriend, after he turned himself in to police in Klipgat, North West Province, on the morning of January 30.

Sergeant Malebye, who served at the Rooiberg police station in the Waterberg District, returned home on the evening of January 25 with her boyfriend. The following morning, her six-year-old grandson discovered her lifeless body. At the time of the discovery, both the boyfriend and the sergeant’s vehicle were missing.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the tragic news, stating that neighbours quickly alerted authorities, and emergency medical personnel confirmed the officer’s death at the scene. Hours later, Sergeant Malebye’s vehicle was found abandoned approximately 50 km away on the Thabazimbi Road near Koedoeskop.

While the motive behind this violent act remains unclear, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of domestic violence. Limpopo’s police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the swift police response that led to the suspect’s arrest, commending the investigation team’s efforts.

“I am pleased that within days of this senseless killing, our police managed to apprehend the callous criminal responsible. I am confident that the investigation will result in a strong case, and that justice will be served,” Hadebe said.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has promised to keep the public informed about the suspect’s court appearance and the upcoming memorial service for Sergeant Malebye.
