Limpopo Police Commissioner Condemns Fake News on Alleged Body Parts Killings
Limpopo’s Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has expressed her disbelief and dismay after a wave of shocking and baseless allegations spread across social media, claiming that foreign nationals are working with South Africans to kill people and harvest their body parts. These unverified rumors have sparked panic and confusion among local communities.
The circulating allegations detail a gruesome scenario where criminals are said to rob vehicles, approach homes under the guise of seeking help, and, once inside, murder their victims and remove body parts while the victims are still alive.
Hadebe was quick to dismiss these claims, calling them both false and irresponsible. “One of our biggest threats at the moment is fake news. We strongly condemn the spreading of unverified information, rumors, or threats that only serve to cause unnecessary panic and confusion, and in some instances, incite violence,” she stated.
The spread of these unsubstantiated rumors on social media platforms has raised concerns about the potential for public unrest, as misinformation fuels fear and distrust within communities.
The Police Commissioner appealed to the public to take greater responsibility when sharing information online, urging people to fact-check claims before passing them along. “We urge everyone to be vigilant and report any such incidents immediately to ensure that law enforcement can act swiftly and appropriately. Those found guilty of spreading false or inflammatory messages will face legal consequences,” Hadebe warned.
This condemnation of fake news comes at a time when the province is already grappling with various crime-related challenges. As the digital landscape grows more influential, the spread of misinformation continues to pose significant risks to public safety.
The Limpopo Police are calling on the community to report any suspicious activities or false rumors directly to authorities in order to prevent further confusion and ensure a safer environment for all.
