KZN Braces for Severe Weather as Rain Warning Escalates to Level 8

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is on high alert as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) upgraded its disruptive rain warning from level 6 to level 8. The escalation signals a heightened risk of severe weather impacts, including widespread flooding, mudslides, and road closures.

Areas at Risk of Severe Flooding

The affected areas include Big Five Hlabisa, eThekwini, Jozini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, and uPhongolo, among others. Heavy rainfall exceeding 150mm within a 24-hour period is anticipated, particularly along the coast and adjacent interior. The potential consequences include:

• Flooding of roads, settlements, and bridges
• Infrastructure damage and displacement of communities
• Mudslides, sinkholes, and soil erosion
• Disruption to essential services

SAWS Urges Caution

SAWS emphasized the dangers posed by fast-flowing streams, flooded roads, and rising water levels. They advised residents to:

• Stay indoors and avoid traveling if possible
• Avoid crossing rivers or streams with water above ankle height
• Move valuables to higher ground in case of floods
• Relocate animals to safe, elevated areas

“If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and seek higher ground,” SAWS warned.

KZN’s Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has activated disaster management teams across the province. MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi confirmed that teams are monitoring weather-prone areas and are ready to respond to emergencies.

Provincial disaster teams have collaborated with stakeholders, including SAPS, Sanral, and municipal practitioners, to ensure preparedness. “The Joint Operations Committee has been convened, and all stakeholders have indicated readiness to manage the situation,” said Cogta spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila.

Cogta urged residents to take precautions while traveling during severe weather, such as keeping vehicle headlights on, driving at reduced speeds, and ensuring windshields remain clear for visibility.

With rain expected to persist until Tuesday, KZN residents are encouraged to stay alert and prioritize safety. The proactive measures taken by authorities aim to mitigate the impacts of what could be one of the most disruptive weather events in recent months.
