ANC Youth League Elective Conference in KZN Faces Further Delays Amid Unresolved Issues

The ANC Youth League’s elective conference in KwaZulu-Natal may be postponed once again without the election of a new leadership, as persistent issues remain unresolved.

Initially scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Durban, the conference did not commence as planned by 5 pm on Sunday. Leadership spent much of Saturday night dealing with registration issues, and the conference, which was expected to begin at 8 am on Sunday, had still not started by late afternoon. Delegates spent the entire day in meetings trying to resolve discrepancies regarding credentials, according to a delegate from the province’s South Coast.

Delays Caused by Delegate Issues

A delegate who spoke on the condition of anonymity explained that one of the main causes of the delay was a problem with the list of delegates from the Tolomane Mnyauza region (formerly known as Ugu) on the South Coast. Some names were missing from the list, leading to confusion and frustration. “We had a problem with the list of delegates from the south coast as some of the comrades did not appear on the list, however, we have sorted that out now,” said the delegate.

Despite the issue being resolved, it remains unclear if the league will be able to proceed with the election of a new leadership team. By 3 pm on Sunday, the ANC Youth League issued a statement stating that the conference would begin at 3.30 pm, yet by 4 pm, the hall remained empty, and delegates were still milling around Greyville Racecourse, waiting for further instructions.

Leadership Vacancies and Uncertainty

In the statement, the league confirmed that Mntuwoxolo Ngudle, the national secretary-general, would open the conference. Originally, the event was scheduled to conclude on Sunday, but it is now uncertain whether the conference will go ahead as planned.

This delay marks the latest in a series of setbacks for the ANC Youth League, which has been without a proper leadership team for several years due to ongoing postponements. The previous leadership, led by former Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu as provincial chairperson and Thanduxolo Sabelo as provincial secretary, was elected in 2022. However, the league’s previous attempt to convene the conference in July 2023 was canceled at the last minute by the national leadership, which directed that all conferences be put on hold to prioritize the general elections.
