Ex-Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda Plans Payback After Losing Job Over Fraud Claims

Former Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has vowed to take action after losing his position due to fraud charges that have now been withdrawn.
Gwamanda, along with his co-accused Mduduzi Zondo, appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where the state provisionally withdrew all charges against them.
The pair had initially faced multiple fraud counts for allegedly running a funeral policy scam in Soweto between 2011 and 2012. The case against Gwamanda was registered in May 2023, the same month he was elected Mayor of Johannesburg.
Gwamanda said the fraud allegations damaged his career, leading to his removal as both mayor and MMC for Community Development.
“I have lost a job, two jobs as a matter of fact. I have lost my reputation. I have been criminalised by the white monopoly capitalist establishment, so it is only fair that I retaliate and everyone must account,” he stated.
Despite the legal victory, Gwamanda remains an ordinary PR councillor for the Johannesburg Municipality. He said he is still considering his next steps following the case’s withdrawal.
