Johannesburg will make history in May 2025 as the first African city to host the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) Conference. The event is expected to bring together international experts in food systems, sustainability, and trade at the Joburg Market — the continent’s largest fresh produce hub.

Set for 14 to 16 May 2025, the WUWM Conference will draw global leaders in wholesale markets, agriculture, and policy to South Africa’s economic heartland. It’s a major step for Johannesburg as it positions itself as a key player in global food trade and supply chain resilience.

“Johannesburg is proud to serve as the gateway to Africa for this important gathering,” said Joburg Market CEO Sello Makhubela. “We are uniquely positioned to facilitate meaningful discussions on food security, sustainability, and the modernization of wholesale markets.”

Makhubela urged attendees to use the opportunity to build partnerships and explore innovative strategies to shape the future of food distribution. The Joburg Market supports more than 5,000 farmers from across South Africa and serves a wide range of clients, including retailers, restaurant owners, and street vendors. It also boasts 55 cold storage units capable of holding over 4,500 pallets of produce.

WUWM has been hosting global conferences for over 40 years with a mission to improve food systems and promote access to fresh, nutritious produce. The organisation serves more than 3 billion people worldwide and is focused on strengthening food supply chains through innovation, education, and collaboration.

This year’s event in Johannesburg will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, and networking sessions centred on supply chain resilience, digital transformation, and expanding trade partnerships. According to Tshegofatso Maakwe, Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications at Joburg Market, the final speaker lineup is still being confirmed but will include top industry voices.
