Johannesburg on Alert: Major 2-week Water Cuts Coming This May

Johannesburg is facing a major water disruption in May, with some areas expected to be without supply for up to two weeks as the city upgrades key parts of its ageing infrastructure.

The City of Johannesburg has confirmed that scheduled maintenance will cause widespread water shortages across the metro. Officials have called on residents to start conserving water now and to prepare for a prolonged period without running taps.

Water upgrade to cause large-scale outages

The City’s Department of Water and Sanitation said the work is essential to improving Johannesburg’s long-term water distribution system. “We urge residents to use water sparingly and to store enough for their daily needs during the maintenance period,” said a department spokesperson.

According to SABC News, the two-week outage will result from upgrades to the city’s water network. The scope of the work means thousands of households and businesses could be left without access to running water.

Authorities say emergency plans are already being rolled out. These include deploying water tankers to high-demand areas and setting up alternative water points for affected communities.

Officials have also advised residents to limit usage and start conservation habits now to reduce pressure on the system and ensure supply where it’s most needed.

City warns: prepare now for the upcoming crisis

While final details around the affected areas will be communicated closer to the time, residents across Johannesburg are being urged to prepare well in advance.

“This is a serious disruption, and we want everyone to be ready. We understand the inconvenience but this work is crucial to preventing even worse failures down the line,” the City said.

The maintenance work and its impact underscore the challenges Johannesburg faces with its water infrastructure and the urgent need for long-term investment and sustainable water management.
