Water Outages Hit Joburg South as Eskom Begins Maintenance

Published

on

Parts of Johannesburg are expected to experience water supply disruptions on Wednesday, 9 April, due to scheduled electrical maintenance by Eskom. The power utility’s work at the Daleside Substation will directly affect Rand Water’s ability to operate a major pumping station.

The Daleside Pumping Station, which supports several southern Johannesburg reservoirs, will be without electricity for the duration of the maintenance. This could result in significantly reduced water pressure or complete outages in areas such as Orange Farm, Ennerdale, and Lawley.

Johannesburg Water has warned that the affected pumping station will be offline from 07:00 to 18:00. Although the initial expectation was an 8-hour disruption, residents should now prepare for up to 11 hours of limited or no water supply as Eskom completes its maintenance.

In preparation for the outage, Johannesburg Water is urging residents to store water ahead of time. It also encouraged the use of alternative methods such as rainwater harvesting to help meet non-drinking water needs during the outage.

Areas affected by the planned outage include:

  • Ennerdale South

  • Ennerdale extensions

  • Finetown

  • Grasmere

  • Lawley

  • Orange Farm

  • Drieziek

  • Lakeside

  • Stretford

Rand Water wraps up successful maintenance elsewhere

Separately, Rand Water confirmed that it had completed urgent infrastructure maintenance at its Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant on Thursday, 3 April. This earlier intervention affected over 100 suburbs, with the Palmiet Pumping Station operating at just 89% capacity for nearly nine hours.

The Palmiet System supplies water to key Johannesburg Water zones, including:

  • Alexander Park Reservoir and towers

  • Midrand System (all reservoirs and towers)

  • Sandton Systems (all reservoirs and towers)

  • South Hills Tower

Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain cautious with their water usage until systems are fully restored.
