Joburg Prepares for 42-Hour Water Outage Across Several Suburbs

A major water outage will leave several central Johannesburg neighbourhoods without supply for nearly two days this week, with Johannesburg Water confirming scheduled maintenance from Wednesday evening through to midday Friday.
The interruption, aimed at improving long-term service delivery, will start at 6pm on Wednesday, 23 April, and continue until noon on Friday, 25 April. Johannesburg Water says the outage is necessary for the installation of new piping at the Hector Norris Pump Station.
Areas that will be affected
According to the utility, the following areas will face either low pressure or no water during the 42-hour window:
-
Johannesburg CBD
-
Newtown
-
Selby
-
Jeppestown
-
Doornfontein
Johannesburg Water has apologised for the inconvenience, stating that arrangements are being made to reduce the impact on residents.
“Further details regarding alternative water supply will be provided,” the utility said in its public notice.
Water restrictions still in place
In addition to the planned outage, Johannesburg remains under Level 1 water restrictions, which have been in effect since November 2024.
“Johannesburg Water has also been implementing a water supply reduction since 8 November 2024, a measure that has been communicated to residents,” the utility added.
Officials say water systems remain stable but under pressure, and restrictions will be enforced as needed. These include scheduled pumping halts at selected pump stations to help stabilise reservoir levels.
Rainfall not enough to ease pressure
Despite recent heavy rains, Johannesburg Water says rainfall alone won’t solve the city’s water woes. The system’s recovery depends on sustainable consumption habits.
“While dams feeding the Rand Water system may appear full, actual water usage remains high, and the infrastructure is under strain,” the statement read.
The utility says it will continue to monitor supply levels and apply necessary restrictions where needed to manage consumption and maintain service stability.
