Johannesburg Water has issued a warning about possible water shortages in several parts of the city due to high demand, unplanned maintenance, and system outages.

The utility confirmed that at least seven reservoirs and one water tower had critically low levels on Saturday evening, prompting officials to shut outlets overnight to allow for recovery. However, despite efforts to reconfigure the system, some areas continue to experience supply issues.

Over 75,000 Properties Could Be Affected

Johannesburg Water reported that at least 370 areas and more than 75,800 properties may face little to no water on Sunday.

City residents were also urged to use water sparingly, as consumption increased by 8% between 24 December and 25 January.

The following reservoirs and water towers are critically low, affecting the areas listed below:

More Water Disruptions on Monday

Johannesburg Water has also announced planned disruptions on Monday for Johannesburg CBD, Newtown, Selby, Jeppestown, and Doornfontein. This is due to the installation of a new water meter at the Hector Norris Pump Station.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the water crisis during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) last week, promising urgent action.

“The government will give people water… As we did with electricity, I am hopeful that we will resolve the water crisis,” he said.

However, Wayne Duvenage from the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) criticized the government’s handling of water infrastructure, saying that the crisis stems from poor planning and a lack of accountability.

Johannesburg Water has called on residents to reduce consumption and report leaks to help stabilize supply. The utility continues to monitor reservoirs and will provide updates as the situation unfolds.
