Three-Day Water Outage to Hit Johannesburg: Affected Areas and What to Expect

Published

on

Thousands of Johannesburg households will be without water this weekend as Johannesburg Water conducts critical maintenance, leading to a three-day supply shutdown. The water outage will begin on Friday, 31 January, and continue until Monday, 3 February, affecting several areas across the city.

The upcoming shutdown follows last week’s maintenance on the Palmiet System, which left parts of Sandton, Midrand, and central Johannesburg without water for 24 hours. Johannesburg Water has warned that some systems may take between three and five days to fully recover after the maintenance is completed on 26 January. This leaves affected areas with little time to stabilize before another round of shutdowns begins.

The latest outage is due to the installation of new isolation valves at the Hector Norris Pump Station, which will halt water supply from Friday evening until late Monday.

Areas Affected

A large number of suburbs will experience water cuts, including but not limited to:

  • Sandton, Midrand, Johannesburg CBD, Houghton, Melville, Hyde Park, Parktown, Yeoville, Berea, Illovo, Mayfair, Fordsburg, Kensington, and Observatory.
  • Other affected areas include Westdene, Rosettenville, Turffontein, Greenside, Killarney, Crown, and Emmarentia.

Johannesburg Water has assured residents that water tankers will be deployed throughout the affected areas during the outage. These tankers will prioritize essential services such as hospitals, schools, and retirement homes. The exact locations of the tankers will be announced closer to the shutdown date.

Businesses, shopping malls, and commercial properties have been urged to prepare backup water supplies to minimize disruptions during the outage.

With some areas potentially taking up to five days to recover after supply is restored, Johannesburg Water has advised residents to store enough water in advance and use water sparingly once the supply is reinstated.

For updates and information on water tanker locations, residents are encouraged to monitor official Johannesburg Water communication channels.
