Johannesburg Water has announced planned maintenance at the Hector Norris Pump Station, which will take place from Friday, 31 January, to Monday, 3 February. The water utility says this work is essential for improving infrastructure and ensuring a sustainable supply in the long term.

Residents in several areas, including the Johannesburg CBD, Newtown, Jeppestown, Doornfontein, and Melville, will experience low pressure or no water during the maintenance period.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala has urged residents to use water sparingly and prepare in advance.

“Residents will be impacted by low pressure to no water for the duration of the maintenance. Alternative water supply will be provided, and residents are urged to store water in preparation,” said Shabalala.

Meanwhile, residents of White River, Mpumalanga, have raised concerns about the poor quality of water supplied by the City of Mbombela municipality. They claim the water is dirty and has a foul smell, making it unsafe for use.

The White River Ratepayers Association has accused the municipality of failing to replace deteriorating asbestos water pipes, which they believe is contributing to the contamination.

Association chairperson Johan Heymans stated that residents are now forced to buy water for daily use.

“Our people can’t wash their clothes or bathe. School uniforms are getting stained, and the stains won’t come out. We’ve taken five samples from different areas, and we will make the results public. The council must be held accountable—we pay high rates and taxes,” said Heymans.

White River residents are now calling on local authorities to take urgent action to resolve the ongoing water crisis.
