Johannesburg Water has declared a water supply reduction across the city, starting Wednesday evening, from 6 pm to 5 am on Thursday. This measure is being implemented due to the significant pressure on reservoirs and water towers, which have been strained by the city’s ongoing high water consumption.

Spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala explained that the decision to throttle water supply follows an eight percent increase in consumption between December 2024 and January 2025. She noted that the current water levels in Johannesburg’s reservoirs and towers are under severe pressure, primarily due to sustained high consumption rates.

“The recent heatwaves and rising temperatures have exacerbated the situation, putting even more strain on our water system,” Shabalala said. “In fact, the past week has seen the highest levels of consumption in the last 12 months, which is unsustainable and calls for urgent action.”

To address this issue and ensure water security, Johannesburg Water has implemented technical interventions to safeguard the integrity of the water supply system. The daily water throttling will take place between 6 pm and 5 am, beginning on the evening of February 5, 2025.

Shabalala has urged residents to play their part in using water responsibly. “Now more than ever, it is essential that we adopt water-saving practices at home and at work,” she emphasized.

In addition to the immediate water throttling measures, Johannesburg Water is continuing its Water Conservation and Water Demand Management (WCWDM) Programme. This initiative aims to ensure a sustainable water supply and reduce pressure on the city’s water networks. Part of the programme includes efforts to identify and address water loss from leaks and bursts, though Shabalala noted that repairs may not be immediate.

“While we will prioritize repairs and maintenance, it is crucial that we all recognize the seriousness of the situation and take immediate action to reduce our water usage,” she said. “Collective efforts are essential in safeguarding Johannesburg’s water resources.”
