12-Hour Water Disruption in Johannesburg: Affected Areas and Maintenance Details

Johannesburg Water has announced a planned 12-hour water shutdown on Saturday, 1 March 2025, to facilitate urgent repairs to a burst 900mm diameter steel pipeline. The maintenance will take place at the intersection of Acacia Road and Republic Road in Ebony Park, affecting several northern suburbs of Johannesburg.
Affected Areas
The following areas will experience a complete water shutdown from 9am to 9pm:
- Greater Ivory Park
- Ebony Park
- Kaalfontein
- All extensions of Rabie Ridge
Residents in these regions are advised to prepare for the temporary disruption and store water in advance. Johannesburg Water has acknowledged the inconvenience caused and assured residents that alternative water supply arrangements will be communicated soon.
Reason for the Shutdown
The burst pipeline requires immediate attention to prevent further damage and ensure long-term service reliability. Johannesburg Water stated that the repairs are part of ongoing efforts to improve water infrastructure and service delivery across the city.
Recovery from Previous Outages
This planned disruption comes as Johannesburg recovers from a series of water outages caused by power failures at critical pumping stations. Mayor Dada Morero confirmed during a recent media briefing that most areas have regained water access, though some regions are still experiencing issues due to airlocks.
“The water supply situation has significantly improved compared to last Friday, 14 February,” Morero said. “Our teams are actively working to resolve airlock problems and restore services fully.”
Ongoing Efforts to Stabilise Water Supply
Johannesburg Water and Rand Water have been collaborating to address the city’s water challenges. Measures include:
- Pressure valve maintenance
- Creation of new pressure management zones
- Proactive leak detection
- Rotational water reductions (implemented since November 2024)
Additionally, the city has begun hiring more fitters, welders, and bricklayers to strengthen its maintenance capacity and respond more effectively to emergencies.
What Residents Can Do
Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to:
- Store sufficient water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene purposes.
- Use water sparingly during the disruption period.
- Stay updated on alternative water supply arrangements via Johannesburg Water’s official channels.
While the 12-hour water disruption may cause temporary inconvenience, the repairs are essential to ensure the long-term stability of Johannesburg’s water supply. Johannesburg Water has assured residents that every effort is being made to minimise the impact and restore services as quickly as possible.
