City Power Announces 8-Hour Planned Power Outages Across Johannesburg This Weekend

Johannesburg residents are advised to brace for scheduled power outages this weekend as City Power carries out essential network maintenance across multiple suburbs. The planned interruptions, which will take place between Thursday and Sunday, are part of the utility provider’s ongoing efforts to improve service reliability and infrastructure.

According to official notices issued by City Power, the power cuts will occur in blocks of 8 hours, starting from either 8am to 4pm or 9am to 5pm, depending on the area. Load shedding remains suspended during this period, so these outages are strictly for maintenance purposes.

Areas Affected by the Johannesburg Power Outages:

Thursday – Olivedale Area (Region B):

From 9am to 5pm, residents in the Olivedale area will experience power outages due to maintenance at the Olivedale Substation.

Affected areas include:

• Olivedale ext.2

• Olivedale ext.3, ext.6, ext.7, ext.21

• Vandia Grove

• Bryanston ext.3

• Ferndale

• Johannesburg North

• Juskei Park

• Meadowhurst

Thursday – Lufhereng Area (Region C):

Power will be off from 8am to 4pm as City Power services the Lufhereng Substation.

Affected area:

• Lufhereng

Saturday – Industria & Surrounding Areas (Region B):

A previously planned outage has been rescheduled for Saturday, from 8am to 2pm, impacting key industrial zones.

Areas affected include:

• Yeast Pro 1 & 2

• Watt Street, Parson Street, Bunsen Street South

• Breweries Riverlea, Riverlea, Eastern Industria

• Bosmont Maraisburg, Industria North, Slovo Crosby 1 & 2

• Lowethal Industrial West, Longdale, George Scott, Springbok Street

• Telford Street, Paarlshop, Nobel Street

• Maraisburg Road, Vega Street 1-3, Industria South

Sunday – Gresswold Substation Areas (Region E):

From 8am to 2pm, maintenance work at Gresswold Substation will affect several suburbs in the northeast.

Affected suburbs include:

• Bramley Gardens, Bramley Park, Athol

• Crystal Gardens, Glenhazel & Glenhazel South

• Kew Central, South, West, and Bramley View

• Linksfield North Ext. 7–11

• Lyndhurst East, Rembrandt Park, Silvamont

• Sunningdale, Pretoria Main Road

• Wynberg East, Wynberg Kew, Wynberg 1 & 2

City Power Safety Advisory

City Power is urging all residents to remain cautious throughout the scheduled outages.

“As the supply may be restored at any time, customers are urged to always treat their electricity supply points as live,” the utility said in a statement.

While the utility acknowledges the inconvenience caused, it stresses that this maintenance work is vital for long-term network stability.

What to Do During the Outages:

• Charge devices in advance

• Keep generators and backup power systems ready

• Avoid opening fridges and freezers unnecessarily

• Switch off sensitive electronics

• Treat all outlets as live to avoid electric shock
