Johannesburg Power Outages Leave Residents Frustrated Amid Maintenance Delays
Residents across Johannesburg faced significant frustration on Monday, December 9, 2024, as numerous areas experienced unplanned power outages. Complaints flooded social media platforms, with many reporting disrupted electricity and water supplies, compounded by delayed maintenance schedules and overwhelmed call centers.
Unplanned Outages Add to Frustration
City Power Johannesburg reported multiple outages throughout the day. The most recent update on Tuesday, December 10, at 10:00, mentioned outages affecting Maraisburg and surrounding areas. Earlier in the morning, reports highlighted electricity disruptions in Randpark Ridge and other neighborhoods.
Residents of Hamburg, Florida, and Bergbron voiced similar grievances, with some claiming their power had been off since the previous afternoon. Social media posts revealed widespread dissatisfaction:
- One resident in Whiteridge wrote, “We can’t be off again the whole day like Friday! No water, no power!”
- Another criticized the city for recurring outages after maintenance, questioning rising rates despite poor service delivery.
Meanwhile, areas like Benrose, Droste Park, and Denver reported delays due to safety concerns, leaving residents without power overnight.
City Power announced scheduled maintenance affecting Vosloorus on December 10, part of a broader maintenance plan from December 9 to 15. Specific neighborhoods, including Vosloorus Extensions 1, 16, and 31, were slated for outages from 9:00 to 18:00.
Ethekwini Municipality also grappled with unplanned outages. Affected areas included Inanda NU, Cato Manor, Umlazi-H, and Isipingo Rail. The municipality confirmed partial restoration in some areas but acknowledged ongoing disruptions.
Both Johannesburg and Durban reported call center lines being down, urging residents to log complaints on social media. This added another layer of difficulty for those seeking assistance during the outages.
As power issues persist, residents across Johannesburg and Durban are calling for improved communication and efficient solutions. How have these outages impacted you? Share your experiences.
