Johannesburg Libraries Celebrate South African Library Week with Fun and Learning

On 17 March 2025, libraries across the City of Johannesburg were filled with excitement as they celebrated South African Library Week. Each library organized fun and educational activities, fostering a sense of community and a love for learning.
Diepsloot Library
Diepsloot Library welcomed primary school learners for an engaging reading session, encouraging children to embrace books as a source of knowledge. Ward 95 Councillor Julius Maake shared an inspiring message, urging the kids to continue exploring the world of books. Banele Zwane, one of the young learners, said, “Reading helps me dream big. I want to read more and learn new things!”
In addition, Diepsloot Library hosted the Science Scuffle Library Rounds, where BASA Primary School claimed victory and will progress to the zonal rounds, showcasing their teamwork and academic prowess.
Poortjie Library
At Poortjie Library, the day was filled with fun activities, including storytellers, a magician, and a coding session for young learners. Senior citizens participated in mobile literacy workshops, and individuals with disabilities explored Braille tools. The event ended on a heartwarming note with food packs distributed to all attendees. Anele Zondo, a participant, said, “This was such a fun and educational experience. I learned new things and even made new friends!”
Blackheath Library
Blackheath Library hosted a book donation drive at Heathway Centre and also registered new members, promoting eResources to broaden digital learning opportunities. Zandile Ndhlovu, a new member, shared her excitement: “I had no idea libraries offered so many free resources. I can’t wait to start using them!”
Diepkloof Zone 1 Library
In collaboration with Phakamisa Isizwe Day Care Centre, Diepkloof Zone 1 Library organized a lively reading session and a library tour for young learners. Nolwazi Sibanyoni, one of the participants, excitedly said, “I love books! Today, I found my new favorite story.”
