Johannesburg Learners Give Back Through Community Outreach Initiative

on

A group of Grade 10 and 11 learners from Waterstone College recently took part in a community service project in southern Johannesburg, gaining hands-on experience while making a meaningful impact. The initiative was coordinated by SOJO Helping Hands Foundation in partnership with Meals on Wheels Community Services (MOWCS) SA Caregivers and Mount Like Eagles Soup Kitchen.

A Day of Service and Learning

The students were divided into two groups, with 12 assisting at the SOJO community farm in Townsview and 10 contributing their efforts at MOMO’s Upliftment Community Development Centre in Turffontein.

At the farm, the learners met Bulie and Dusty, two participants in the farm project, who guided them through the site’s history and operations. They learned about the infrastructure, including the water tank, irrigation system, pumps, and worm farm, while also getting their hands dirty by weeding and harvesting vegetables.

Meanwhile, at MOMO’s, students helped sort clothing packs for those in need ahead of the Mandela #HelpThyNeighbour Day, an annual SOJO event. They also participated in a garden clean-up and served soup to around 50 community members. The learners further supported the centre by donating books and other essentials.

Building a Culture of Giving

Nicky Vakaloudis, CEO of SOJO Business and Tourism and the SOJO Helping Hands Foundation, praised the students for their dedication.

“It was inspiring to see these young individuals fully engage with the activities at both sites. Each project combined education, service, and community support. We hope this experience stays with them and encourages them to continue giving back,” said Vakaloudis.

Christine Crossley from MOWCS SA Caregivers echoed these sentiments. “Their hard work and commitment made a significant impact. We are truly grateful for their enthusiasm in serving others,” she said.

As a token of appreciation, volunteers Paula van Vuuren and Rose Kuscus from the soup kitchen treated the learners and their teachers to a meal of soup and vetkoek.

Encouraging Community Involvement

The initiative reflects the power of collaboration in transforming Johannesburg’s southern communities.

“Let’s continue working together to build a thriving community. We encourage everyone in the south of Joburg to play their part—clean up, take care of your surroundings, and help where you can,” urged Vakaloudis.
