Johannesburg Emergency Services on High Alert as Heavy Rains Continue

Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall continue to batter Gauteng, keeping Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) busy with flood-related rescues and infrastructure damage.
Heavy downpours on Wednesday led to flooding in several areas, including Randpark Ridge, Newlands, Struben Valley, Weltevredenpark, Jukskei Park, and Witkoppen Road. Emergency teams responded to multiple incidents, including motorists trapped on submerged bridges.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that two motorists were rescued from their bakkies—one at Jukskei Platina Bridge on Witkoppen Road and another in Weltevredenpark. Additionally, walls collapsed in Honey Bee and Randpark Ridge, though no injuries were reported.

Mulaudzi urged motorists to remain cautious, as debris from the heavy rainfall still poses a risk on many roads. He also advised residents in low-lying areas to avoid crossing river streams.
Johannesburg EMS remains on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of the city. Specialized teams, including aquatic rescue units, are ready to respond to emergencies.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. The storms may bring heavy rain, strong winds, excessive lightning, and hail. Meanwhile, fire danger alerts remain in effect for parts of the Northern and Eastern Cape.
