Johannesburg City Marathon 2025 Draws Competitive Field

The Johannesburg City Marathon, hosted by the Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club, took place on March 30, starting and finishing at the Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre in Kibler Park. The event attracted elite athletes and amateur runners alike, reinforcing its reputation as one of the city’s premier road-running races.
A Race Through Iconic Landmarks
Participants tackled one of three race distances: a full marathon (42.2km), a half-marathon (21.1km), and a 10km race. The 42.2km and 21.1km races kicked off at 06:00, with the 10km starting shortly after at 06:30.
Runners enjoyed a unique opportunity to race through some of Johannesburg’s most famous landmarks. The course took them past Gold Reef City, the historic Johannesburg Central Police Station, the Constitutional Court precinct, and the Nelson Mandela Bridge. One of the race’s highlights was the rare chance to run on the M1 freeway.
A Successful Second Edition
Natalie Roelf, secretary of the Harriers Athletics Club, reflected on the event’s success, emphasizing its competitive nature and smooth execution.
“The 2025 edition was truly a success. We saw a competitive marathon with serious runners making good time. We hosted pro runners and novices alike, which is truly a testament to the versatility of the Johannesburg Marathon. There were also no medical incidents, which makes me happy,” Roelf said.
Among the participants were adaptive athlete Bianca van der Schyff and her running partner Glenda Williams-Sekwale, showcasing the marathon’s inclusive spirit. Yanga and Lisa Duma also made their marathon debut, highlighting the race’s appeal to new runners.
A Key Event for Comrades Qualifiers
The Johannesburg City Marathon served as a Comrades Marathon qualifier, making it a crucial event for long-distance runners aiming to secure their spot in South Africa’s most prestigious ultra-marathon.
With a well-organized course, enthusiastic support along the route, and a high-energy atmosphere, the event proved to be a thrilling challenge for both seasoned runners and first-time participants.
As runners crossed the finish line, they were greeted with well-earned medals, marking the end of a race that blended competition, endurance, and community spirit in the heart of Gauteng.
