The Johannesburg City Library has officially reopened its doors, marking a major milestone for residents and book lovers. The partial reopening, led by Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero and Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) CEO Themba Mathibe, took place on 21 March 2025. The event coincided with South African Library Week and Human Rights Day, reinforcing the city’s dedication to education and public access to knowledge.

The first phase of the reopening allows access to the ground floor and children’s reading section, with the entire library expected to be fully operational later in 2025. Visitors can begin using these areas from 24 March 2025.

The JDA played a crucial role in upgrading the facility, ensuring it meets safety and compliance standards. Renovations included electrical repairs, improved fire safety measures, waterproofing, and generator servicing. Additional upgrades, such as fire-rated walls, fire doors, and a new fire water tank, were also completed to align with emergency regulations.

The restoration aims to preserve the library’s historic architecture while incorporating modern features for a better user experience. JDA CEO Themba Mathibe emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “The reopening of the Johannesburg City Library is a testament to the City’s commitment to preserving its cultural and educational heritage.”

Mayor Morero echoed this sentiment, highlighting the role of libraries in community upliftment. “The first phase of the reopening symbolizes our investment in knowledge and the power of learning to change lives,” he said.

With renovations still ongoing, the City of Johannesburg remains committed to ensuring the library continues to serve as a cornerstone of education and culture for generations to come.
