The City of Johannesburg has earned international recognition for its innovative Biogas Project, securing first place at the prestigious C40 seminar in Lagos, Nigeria. The Environment & Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), through its Waste Management & Regulation Unit, won $10,000 and technical support for its groundbreaking approach to sustainable waste management.

The seminar, hosted as part of the Climate Action Implementation (CAI) Africa Regional Academy, gathered city officials from Johannesburg, Lagos, Tshwane, Nairobi, Accra, Addis Ababa, and Dar es Salaam. Each city presented business cases focused on energy and waste management, with Johannesburg emerging as the leader.

Biogas Project: A Sustainable Waste Solution

The Biogas Project is part of Johannesburg’s Alternative Waste Treatment Technology initiative and focuses on:

  • Diverting organic waste from landfills to curb pollution.
  • Generating renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Recovering resources by producing valuable byproducts like digestate for agriculture.

Tebogo Modiba, Executive Director for EISD, praised the achievement, saying:
“We are proud of the City’s efforts to explore alternative waste reduction strategies and address landfill challenges. This project showcases Johannesburg’s commitment to leveraging innovation for a sustainable future.”

Johannesburg’s recognition at the C40 seminar solidifies its role as a leader in environmental sustainability, setting a benchmark for other cities facing similar waste management challenges. As urban populations grow, projects like this will be key to building a greener, more resilient future.
