Joburg Probes R263 Million Water Tanker Tender Corruption

The City of Johannesburg is investigating allegations of corruption in the awarding of a R263 million water tanker contract, following claims that the tender process was irregular.
Reports surfaced in December suggesting that two unqualified companies were awarded the lucrative contract to supply Johannesburg with water tankers for three years. It is alleged that the companies failed to meet the necessary bidding criteria but still secured the deal.
Joburg Mayor Dada Morero confirmed that the city is probing the matter to determine whether the tender was improperly awarded.
“I wish to also indicate that my office has engaged Johannesburg Water management about the reported alleged corruption related to the R263 million water tanker tender case,” Morero stated.
The case is currently before the courts, with Johannesburg Water’s internal auditors also conducting an independent investigation. The outcome of these inquiries will determine whether further legal action is taken against those involved.
The investigation comes as Johannesburg continues to grapple with water supply challenges, placing further scrutiny on how resources are managed within the city.
