Joburg Water Shutdown Update: Zwartkopjes Maintenance Complete, Systems Recovering
Johannesburg Water has announced significant progress in its scheduled maintenance operations, with work at the Zwartkopjes pump station now fully completed. The utility confirmed on 15 December 2024 that Zwartkopjes is operating at 100% capacity, and systems supplied from the station are recovering as expected.
However, while this marks a major milestone, residents in some areas may still face delays in water supply restoration due to various factors. Here’s the latest on the ongoing water shutdown in Johannesburg.
Systems Recovering from Zwartkopjes Pump Station
Johannesburg Water reported that several key areas are in the process of recovery. These include:
- Parktown
- Berea
- Forest Hill
- Naturena
- Orlando East
- Hector Norris Pump Station (which supplies Johannesburg CBD)
Pumping operations at the Hector Norris Pump Station have also commenced, and Johannesburg Water is monitoring capacity to ensure steady recovery. The utility stated:
“Outlets of systems are closed to hold capacity in reservoirs where supply is received.”

Despite the successful maintenance at Zwartkopjes, Johannesburg Water emphasized that supply restoration does not occur instantly across all regions. The speed at which residents regain water depends on two primary factors:
- Proximity to the Pump Station: Residents living closer to pump stations typically see their supply restored faster.
- Elevation of Properties: Low-lying areas recover more quickly, while high-lying regions may experience delays of up to 14 days.
The utility further clarified:
“Complete recovery of all impacted systems takes between five and 14 days after supply has been fully restored. Johannesburg Water technical teams will also ensure to reconfigure systems to ensure water supply is fully restored.”
To alleviate the impact of the ongoing shutdown, Johannesburg Water has initiated “self-help” points where residents can fetch water. Current fill-up points include:
- Southdale Depot: 91 Side Road, Southdale (Regions B and F)
- Hamberg Depot: 159 Albertina Sisulu, Roodepoort
Johannesburg Water noted that more self-help locations are being investigated and will be communicated as they become available.
Work at the Eikenhof pump station is progressing as scheduled, with completion expected by 16 December 2024 at 21:00. Johannesburg Water assured residents that all efforts are being made to minimize disruptions and restore supply promptly.
