City Power Extends Operating Hours to Complete Prepaid Meter Upgrades

Published

on

City Power in Johannesburg is working hard to upgrade outdated prepaid electricity meters. If you haven’t upgraded your meter by Sunday, November 24, 2024, you may lose access to electricity. Eskom has announced that old KRN1 meters will no longer accept tokens after this date.

City Power Races Against the Clock

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said over 99% of meters have been upgraded. However, 1,001 households still need updates.

Key areas facing delays include:

  • Alexandra: 562 homes. Some residents refuse to allow technicians entry.
  • Midrand: 255 homes. Many addresses remain unverified.
  • Other Locations: 188 households. Residents were unavailable during the day.

To address this, City Power has introduced several measures:

  1. Extended Hours: Service Delivery Centres now stay open until 7 PM on weekdays. They also operate on weekends.
  2. Night Shifts: Technicians will work after hours to assist busy residents.
  3. DIY Option: Residents can upgrade their meters independently.

How to Upgrade Your Prepaid Meter

If your meter still uses KRN1, you can upgrade it when buying electricity. Here’s what to do:

  1. Enter the three 20-digit token codes you receive.
  2. If the last token is accepted, your meter is upgraded.

For help, call 0800 202 925. You can also request a technician to assist you.

Checking Your Meter Status

Not sure if your meter has been upgraded? Follow these steps:

  • Call City Power: Dial 0800 202 925 for confirmation.
  • Visit a Service Centre: Staff will check your meter.
  • Enter Code: Input 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 into your meter.

Avoid Fraud

City Power warns residents not to pay technicians directly. If someone demands payment, report it immediately to 0800 002 587. City Power ensures all upgrades are free.

Chance to Avoid Penalties

If you have bypassed your meter, now is your chance to correct it. Over 4,100 households have already normalized their meters without fines. City Power urges all residents to legalize their connections before the deadline.

City Power is working to ensure fair electricity access for everyone. Use the extended hours or DIY methods to upgrade your meter now. Don’t wait until the last minute!
