Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers arrested 183 motorists over the past week for serious traffic violations, including excessive speeding and driving under the influence.

The arrests come despite the alarming number of road fatalities recorded over the festive season, highlighting the continued disregard for road safety among many South African drivers.

JMPD’s High-Speed Unit caught 21 motorists driving at dangerous speeds across the city. The most severe case involved a driver caught speeding at 192km/h in an 80km/h zone. Such reckless behavior not only endangers the driver but also other road users.

Gauteng police have intensified their crackdown on high-speed offenders, especially in 80km/h zones. Under South African traffic law, exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h in urban areas or 40km/h on freeways is an arrestable offence.

A staggering 162 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol between January 20 and 26. The JMPD has reiterated the dangers of drunk driving, urging road users to plan ahead, use designated drivers, or arrange alternative transport.

“We cannot stress enough the dangers and legal repercussions of impaired driving. We urge motorists to plan, use sober drivers and avoid drinking and driving,” the department said.

Drivers caught speeding excessively or driving under the influence face severe legal consequences. A motorist exceeding the speed limit in an 80km/h zone can have their driver’s licence suspended for six months for a first offence. A second offence could result in a suspension of up to five years.

VDT Attorneys has warned that offenders not only face court appearances but also the risk of a criminal record, which could impact future employment and travel opportunities.

“The implications of these provisions are dramatic for all road users. Not only are you required to appear in court, but you could also face the prospect of potentially having your license (or permit) suspended and receiving a criminal record,” the law firm stated.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of responsible driving to reduce road fatalities and injuries. As the crackdown continues, motorists are urged to obey traffic laws, drive within speed limits, and never drink and drive.

With enforcement efforts increasing, reckless drivers risk not only their own lives but also severe legal penalties if they are caught breaking the law.
