Joburg’s Holiday Sports Programme Keeps Kids Active and Safe During School Break

The City of Johannesburg is keeping schoolchildren engaged and safe this autumn through its citywide holiday programme, led by the Community Development department.
This initiative, aligned with the school calendar, provides children access to daily activities at local sports and recreation centres throughout the city. It’s more than just a place to play—it’s a structured, supervised programme offering both fun and support during the holidays.
MMC Nkokou joins in at South Rand Centre
On Friday, 4 April 2025, Community Development MMC Tebogo Nkokou visited the South Rand Recreation Centre to take part in the activities and connect with young participants. Despite rainy weather, learners from schools like Kenilworth High and Crestview Primary came out in numbers to enjoy games such as netball, football, and traditional playground favourites like scotch.
MMC Nkokou applauded the children’s energy and praised the city’s commitment to creating safe environments during school breaks.
“It’s wonderful to see so many young people participating in activities that are healthy and enriching,” said Nkokou. “These programmes are designed to keep you safe and active while giving your parents peace of mind. We want to support you as future leaders.”
Beyond sport: life skills and mentorship
The holiday programme doesn’t stop at physical activity. Operations manager Thabo Nkwadi explained that the initiative also incorporates life skills training, counselling, and mentorship, offering a more holistic approach to youth development.
“This programme complements the school curriculum by supporting learners during their time off, outside of the classroom,” Nkwadi said.
University of Johannesburg student Bongani Mawela, currently pursuing a Master’s in Sports Management, joined the day’s event as part of his academic training. “Being here gives me practical insight into how community programmes work—it’s a great learning experience,” he said.
Brixton Centre promotes basketball and unity
MMC Nkokou later visited the Brixton Recreational Centre, where he praised local Councillor Alex Christians for his continued dedication to youth engagement, particularly through basketball. The MMC emphasised how sport brings people together, develops both physical and mental wellbeing, and creates safe spaces where young people can thrive.
