Joburg Braces for More Storms as Authorities Urge Caution

Johannesburg residents have been warned to stay alert as heavy rains are expected to continue across the city and surrounding areas. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level five warning for severe thunderstorms, particularly affecting the central and eastern regions of the country.

Pedestrians, motorists, and those living in low-lying areas have been urged to take extra precautions, as wet conditions have already led to several accidents and traffic disruptions.

One person has died, and two others were injured following an accident on Republic Road near Cresta. The crash involved a white Toyota with two occupants.

According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, initial investigations suggest the driver lost control due to the slippery road surface before crashing into a tree.

“The male driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while a female passenger suffered serious injuries and has been transported to Helen Joseph Hospital. The scene remains active with emergency services working to clear the roadway. Motorists are advised to exercise caution in the area,” Fihla said.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) has assured residents that response teams are ready to handle any water-related emergencies.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant.

“People must avoid crossing rivers and streams, even when carrying out daily activities. Motorists should not attempt to drive through flooded roads or low-lying bridges and should maintain a safe following distance. Our aquatic rescue unit remains on high alert as heavy rainfall is expected to persist,” Mulaudzi said.

Disaster management teams have been deployed across all seven regions of the city to monitor potential risks and respond swiftly to emergencies.
