The City of Johannesburg’s emergency services remained on high alert on Thursday following a severe thunderstorm warning issued by the South African Weather Service.

According to the Weather Service, parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga could experience heavy downpours, excessive lightning, strong winds, and hail, raising concerns over potential localized flooding and damage.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi cautioned that the extreme weather could lead to traffic disruptions and urged motorists to exercise vigilance.

“Motorists should extend a safe following distance and avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges,” Mulaudzi said.

He also advised residents in flood-prone areas to closely monitor rising water levels and seek higher ground if necessary.

“Johannesburg emergency services remain on high alert overnight, actively monitoring all seven regions of the city,” he added.
