tarynJohannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) is gearing up for heavy thunderstorms in Gauteng. After recent rains, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of more rain, with potential risks for flash floods and tough driving conditions. Residents and motorists should stay alert and take precautions to stay safe.
Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that specialized EMS teams are on standby. These teams include aquatic rescue units trained to handle incidents involving water. “We are focused on the safety of everyone in Johannesburg,” Mulaudzi said. Joburg EMS will monitor all seven city regions and respond as needed.
Mulaudzi also urged drivers to be cautious. “Please avoid crossing rivers and flooded roads. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles to lower accident risks,” he advised.
SAWS meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela predicts a wet summer with above-average rainfall for much of South Africa. Gauteng, Free State, North West, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga may see increased rain during November and December. This rainy season aligns with a weak La Niña weather pattern, which typically brings more rainfall.
Thobela added that temperatures will also stay high. “This season, we expect both above-average rain and higher temperatures,” he explained. Thobela recommends that residents monitor weather updates for their safety.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, said his team is prepared for possible floods, droughts, heatwaves, and veld fires. He warned that these events, worsened by climate change, could increase damage and disruptions. Hlabisa also stressed the need for everyone to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
With thunderstorms on the way, Joburg EMS and government teams are ready to help. However, it’s essential for residents to stay cautious and take safety steps.
