City of Johannesburg Offers 200 Bursaries for 2025 Academic Year

The City of Johannesburg is offering 200 bursaries for the 2025 academic year. This initiative aims to support young South Africans who want to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at accredited institutions.

Who Can Apply?

This bursary is available to young people who live permanently in Johannesburg. Applicants must meet these key requirements:

  • Academic Merit: Candidates will be chosen based on their academic performance.
  • Accredited Institutions: Students must attend an accredited South African college or university.
  • No Other Funding: Applicants should not receive any other grants or bursaries.
  • Duration of Qualification: The bursary covers qualifications lasting at least one year. It does not apply to postgraduate studies.

Financial Details

The bursary provides up to R40,000 per academic year. This amount covers tuition, registration fees, and the cost of books and study materials. Additionally, students can renew the bursary each year based on their academic performance.

To apply, candidates must submit certified copies of the following documents:

  • Most recent academic record
  • South African identity document
  • Proof of residence in Johannesburg (like a utility bill)
  • Parents’ proof of income or death certificate; if necessary, an affidavit is required

The City of Johannesburg wants to help students succeed without requiring repayment of the bursary after graduation. According to Mbulelo Ruda, Group Executive Director for Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS), “The goal is to help address socio-economic challenges faced by young people.”
