An inmate has tragically died at the Mangaung Correctional Centre on Sunday, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed.

The department stated that the inmate was found to have taken his own life by hanging.

Due to privacy concerns, the personal details of the inmate are not being released at this time as the family is being notified of the tragic incident.

Investigation Launched

The Office of the National Commissioner has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The department urged the public to be patient and understanding, emphasizing the importance of following proper procedures while respecting the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

“We appeal for patience and understanding as we ensure that the proper procedures are followed with due respect to the family’s privacy,” the statement read.

Recent Incident at Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre

This incident follows a controversial death at the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre in October. In that case, a female inmate died weeks after being allegedly tortured by prison wardens to reveal the source of a smuggled cellphone.

A raid at the facility later uncovered the contraband, including the cellphone allegedly found in the inmate’s possession. According to her family, she was tortured to disclose how the item was smuggled into the prison.

However, the Department of Correctional Services denied the allegations, with spokesperson Singabankho Nxumalo stating that the inmate was unwell and transferred to an outside hospital, where she later passed away.

“The allegations raised are definitely a lie,” Nxumalo said at the time. “The family can be provided with her medical report and cause of death.”
