Law enforcement agencies in Gauteng are investigating a harrowing human trafficking case after Ethiopian nationals escaped captivity from a house in Sandringham, Johannesburg.

Late Thursday evening, around 9 PM, law enforcement responded to a tip-off from concerned neighbors about suspicious activities at a residence on Luster Road. The operation, led by the Hawks in collaboration with the Sandringham SAPS, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and a private security firm, uncovered a grim scene.

Inside the house, 15 naked individuals, suspected to be Ethiopian nationals, were found held captive. The horrifying discovery intensified as 11 other victims required immediate medical attention and were transported to nearby hospitals.

Initial investigations revealed that some captives managed to escape by breaking a window and forcing their way through burglar bars. While several escapees were rounded up near the crime scene, others remain unaccounted for. Authorities have launched a manhunt to locate the missing individuals.

Colonel Philani Nkwalase, spokesperson for the Hawks, urged the public to report sightings of anyone in the area who may appear distressed or improperly dressed, as they might be linked to the incident.

The operation led to the arrest of three suspects allegedly involved in the trafficking ring. The suspects were found in possession of a 9mm Tokarev pistol with a magazine but no ammunition. They are being investigated for human trafficking and illegal firearm possession.

The Gauteng Hawks’ serious organised crime investigation unit is now handling the case, aiming to uncover the full extent of the trafficking network.

The 26 undocumented individuals rescued are undergoing processing to confirm their status as trafficking victims. Their escape has brought attention to the dire circumstances many endure under trafficking rings.

Colonel Nkwalase emphasized the importance of community vigilance. “The public is urged to report any person seen without wearing clothes in the area as they may be linked to the incident,” he said.

This case sheds light on the disturbing reality of human trafficking in South Africa. Collaborative efforts between law enforcement and communities are crucial in dismantling such networks and protecting vulnerable individuals.
