Hawks Investigate High Treason Claims Tied to Allegations Against Ramaphosa and ANC

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) is investigating four case dockets of high treason related to allegations made against President Cyril Ramaphosa and the African National Congress (ANC) to the United States government.

Hawks Confirm Investigation but Withhold Names

On Monday, Hawks head General Godfrey Lebeya confirmed that the investigation is ongoing but declined to name the organizations involved, stating that no formal charges had been laid.

“We have indeed received four case dockets against the entities that I do not want to start by mentioning their names, which is the normal practice in that we don’t mention the names of the entities before they are charged,” said Lebeya.

Despite the Hawks’ silence on the matter, speculation is rife that minority rights groups AfriForum and Solidarity are at the center of the probe.

AfriForum and Solidarity’s US Engagements Under Scrutiny

Both AfriForum and Solidarity recently appealed to the US government, claiming that the ANC was actively sidelining certain groups within South Africa. These appeals have now come under legal scrutiny, with allegations of high treason being investigated.

AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel remains defiant, insisting that the ANC must be held accountable.

“It will cement our position because it will show that there are indeed ANC leaders who abuse their power to govern over sections of the population, while ANC leaders that have been implicated in corruption in the Zondo Commission have not been acted against,” Kriel stated.

Solidarity CEO Dr. Dirk Hermann dismissed the high treason allegations as baseless.

“The accusations of high treason against the delegation of the Solidarity movement are baseless, unfounded, and do not cause us any sleepless nights,” Hermann said.

Legal and Political Implications

The case raises significant legal and political questions, particularly regarding freedom of speech, lobbying efforts, and the boundaries of political activism. If the Hawks’ investigation leads to formal charges, it could set a precedent for how political organizations engage with foreign governments.

For now, South Africans await further developments as the Hawks continue their probe into one of the country’s most politically sensitive cases.
