Gauteng Transport Committee Backs Ceasefire as Taxi Violence Truce Begins

The Gauteng community safety and transport committee has thrown its support behind a newly agreed ceasefire in the province’s troubled taxi industry, calling on all associations to respect the truce and commit to long-term peace. The call follows a meeting last Friday between Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela and stakeholders from the taxi sector, where parties committed to opening formal mediation aimed at ending deadly clashes.

The gathering was prompted by the recent killing of three taxi marshals, who were shot while on duty in Mofolo, Soweto. Their deaths added to growing concerns about ongoing violence within the industry. Committee chairperson Bandile Masuku said the meeting marked a critical turning point and urged law enforcement to do more to curb the bloodshed.

“We are calling on the SAPS to intensify targeted operations against taxi-related violence. This industry cannot continue to be plagued by killings without consequences,” said Masuku.

He said all taxi associations involved in the conflict must now take accountability by engaging in mediation talks and submitting a progress report to MEC Diale-Tlabela by 29 April 2025.
