tarynGauteng police have made significant progress in tackling the ongoing issue of kidnapping in the province, rescuing two businessmen and arresting seven suspects in separate incidents over the past week.
In the most recent case, on December 7, a Chinese businessman was kidnapped in the Springs area of Ekurhuleni by a group of armed assailants. The criminals hijacked the victim and took him captive, but quick police intervention led to the interception of their getaway vehicle, an Audi A3, at an intersection in Lenasia on December 8. Two of the kidnappers were arrested, and shortly after, authorities were able to rescue the businessman from an address in Meriting.
The police action didn’t stop there. Another kidnapping had occurred just days earlier, on December 1, when businessman Ashraf Kader was hijacked and taken by force in the Wierdaburg area. In this case, an intelligence-driven operation led to the recovery of a Jeep SRT8, which had been abandoned in a garage in Nellmapius, Tshwane. Police followed up on the lead and located the kidnappers at an address in Mamelodi, where they arrested four individuals and rescued two victims. Along with the suspects, law enforcement seized firearms, cellphones, and two vehicles, including the aforementioned Jeep and a Hyundai Getz.
The success of these operations is a testament to the coordinated efforts of Gauteng police, whose strategic use of intelligence and rapid response to reports has led to the dismantling of kidnapping rings across the province. The police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, confirmed that the law enforcement team is continuing its efforts to crack down on such criminal syndicates.
Authorities have cautioned that kidnappings remain a serious threat, and the fight to apprehend perpetrators continues as the police pursue leads and investigate further.
