Five suspects have been arrested in Gauteng after allegedly hijacking a truck while disguised in police and metro uniforms. The group, aged between 50 and 69, was intercepted shortly after hijacking a vehicle loaded with solar batteries worth an estimated R5 million.

The bust happened in Sebenza, along Modderfontein Road, following an intelligence-driven operation involving multiple law enforcement and security units. The suspects were caught in possession of the stolen truck and two vehicles used in the crime.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, some of the suspects were wearing uniforms resembling those of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) and South African Police Service (SAPS) at the time of arrest.

“The team also rescued the truck driver and recovered the hijacked truck,” Masondo confirmed.

Authorities were tipped off by the SAPS counter-intelligence division, which had been monitoring a group allegedly involved in a series of truck hijackings across the province.

The suspects were found with a Hyundai Accent and a Hyundai iX35, believed to have been used during the hijacking.

They face charges of truck hijacking, kidnapping, possession of suspected stolen property, and impersonating police officers.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni praised the coordinated police and private security effort, saying, “This is a major breakthrough. It may help crack other similar cases where criminals posed as officers of the law.”
