Gauteng Metrorail services are experiencing intermittent disruptions as heavy rains continue to impact the railway infrastructure, leading to flooding at several key stations and rail corridors.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) confirmed that flooding has affected multiple stations, including Silverton and Belle Ombre, as well as various rail lines across the province.

Prasa spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng explained that the Leralla station has been particularly affected, with flooded tracks causing trains to be diverted to Limindlela station in Thembisa.

Other areas facing significant flooding include platforms between Industria and Westbury (Johannesburg — Randfontein), Kliptown and Tshiawelo (Midway — Johannesburg), Merafe and Dube (Naledi — Johannesburg), and Grosvenor and Mayfair (Naledi/Midway/Randfontein — Johannesburg).

Waterlogged infrastructure, including Perway tracks, has rendered some sections of the network temporarily impassable, prompting a speed restriction of up to 15 km/h for safety.

Further complicating operations, a sinkhole at Pinedene and Braamfontein Yard, along with a collapsed embankment between Pinedene and Irene, has made train movement more difficult. Level crossing flooding at Pienaarspoort station and issues at Wolmerton depot are also impacting maintenance activities.

Mofokeng assured commuters that technical teams are on-site, working to assess the damage, pump out excess water, and carry out emergency repairs. Additional safety protocols have been put in place to protect both passengers and railway staff during this period.

Prasa has advised commuters to expect possible delays and to plan their journeys accordingly.
