The Gauteng Department of Health has taken decisive action against payroll fraud by freezing the salaries of 66 employees who failed to verify their employment status. This marks a significant step in the Ziveze (Reveal Yourself) campaign, launched in October 2024, aimed at eliminating ghost workers and curbing wasteful expenditure.

With a workforce of 85,642 employees, the department is determined to ensure that every individual on its payroll is actively contributing to healthcare services. MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, stressed the importance of this initiative, highlighting the department’s responsibility to use limited resources efficiently.

“We cannot afford to waste money on ghost employees while healthcare workers are looking for jobs and thousands of people need access to healthcare,” Nkomo-Ralehoko stated.

A Firm Warning for Non-Compliant Employees

As part of the Ziveze campaign, the department has instructed all employees to verify their employment status at local human resource offices. Spokesperson Motalatale Modiba warned that those who refuse to comply risk permanent removal from the payroll and potential criminal charges.

“The verification process ensures that all employees are actively working and that their records match the department’s official staff establishment,” Modiba explained.

Beyond tackling payroll fraud, the campaign aims to enhance accountability, optimise resource allocation, and strengthen service delivery. By addressing these challenges, the department seeks to improve the integrity of the healthcare workforce and ensure better healthcare services for all Gauteng residents.
