Gauteng Department of Education Cuts Ties with Nal’ibali After Sexual Assault Allegation

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has severed ties with the Nal’ibali literacy campaign following serious allegations of sexual assault involving one of their practitioners and a Grade 3 learner at Braamfischerville Primary School.

Nal’ibali, a nationwide reading-for-enjoyment initiative, partnered with GDE to support early childhood education, particularly in the foundation phase after the Early Childhood Development (ECD) transfer to the Department of Education.

GDE spokesperson Steven Mabona confirmed that the incident occurred on March 24, 2025. It was reported to the school by the learner’s parent the following day. He clarified that the accused was a Nal’ibali practitioner, not a GDE employee. Upon learning of the allegation, the school principal advised the parent to file a criminal case, which led to the practitioner’s suspension and eventual arrest on March 28, 2025. Mabona said a joint meeting with the School Governing Body (SGB) was held to update them on the situation, and a parent engagement session is planned for April 12, 2025, to further discuss the matter and ensure the safety of students.

“The incident is part of a wider issue we are addressing regarding sexual misconduct in schools,” Mabona stated. He also highlighted that the department has been actively vetting all current and new employees to ensure safety within schools.

The GDE has dealt with 42 cases of sexual misconduct, with 19 cases finalized. This includes 11 dismissals, four exonerations, two withdrawals due to lack of evidence, and one resignation. The remaining cases are still being investigated or undergoing disciplinary hearings. Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane emphasized the department’s commitment to creating a safe learning environment and vowed to collaborate with law enforcement to address these issues swiftly and justly.
