Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile is set to deliver the province’s 2025 budget on Tuesday. Originally scheduled for early March, the tabling was delayed due to the postponement of the national budget.

A key element in the national budget proposals is the division of revenue bills, which outline how much each province will receive from the National Treasury.

The 2025 provincial budget is being presented in a challenging context, with the National Treasury urging government bodies to adopt stricter financial measures. Gauteng has already been impacted by budget cuts, notably having to let go of over 1,000 assistant teachers in 2024 due to a freeze on funding from the National Treasury.

In addition to funding cuts, the Gauteng government faces pressure to manage its substantial e-toll debt, with a multibillion-dollar repayment plan in place. Opposition parties have called on the provincial government to prioritize budget allocations for infrastructure, education, and healthcare improvements.
