OR Tambo, SAA pilots strike, fuel system breakdown
The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has announced that the fuel system at OR Tambo International Airport is fully operational again following a mechanical breakdown that disrupted refuelling and delayed flights on Monday.
Fuel System Issue Resolved
In a statement, ACSA confirmed operations are back to normal:
“We apologise for any inconvenience. Passengers still experiencing delays should contact their airlines directly for updates,” said ACSA.
ACSA regional manager Jabulani Khambule explained the problem stemmed from a mechanical failure:
“The breakdown involved a valve on the fuel system. This was not a supply shortage but a mechanical issue we resolved. Operations have resumed, and we are working through the backlog caused by the delays,” he clarified during an eNCA interview.
SAA Pilots’ Strike Suspended
Meanwhile, South African Airways (SAA) confirmed the suspension of the pilots’ strike after successful negotiations. SAA agreed to a 9.47% salary increase and additional work-life balance provisions.
SAA interim CEO Professor John Lamola remarked:
“This agreement resolves the deadlock and prioritizes both productivity and work-life balance for our pilots.”
The airline has resumed its regular flight schedule, with over 100 pilots returning to duty.
For updates on delayed flights or further assistance, passengers are encouraged to contact their airlines.
