FlySafair Responds to Rumours of Passenger Assisting in Landing Aircraft

FlySafair has addressed circulating rumours on social media suggesting that a passenger was forced to land one of its aircraft after the pilot fell ill. The airline clarified the situation surrounding flight FA711 from George to Johannesburg, which took place on Wednesday, January 29.
According to FlySafair, during the latter part of the journey, the Captain reported feeling unwell. In accordance with standard operating procedures, the First Officer, who is fully certified and trained to operate the aircraft independently, took over command and successfully landed the flight at OR Tambo International Airport.
The flight, which had departed George Airport on time at 11:00 AM, arrived at OR Tambo at approximately 12:30 PM. The airline emphasized that all flight operations proceeded as usual until the Captain informed the First Officer of his discomfort. The First Officer then assumed control for the remainder of the flight.
In accordance with safety protocols, the First Officer requested priority landing clearance and also sought assistance from any qualified pilots on board. A qualified passenger pilot assisted by reading out the necessary checklists, though they did not participate in flying the aircraft.
Upon arrival, emergency medical personnel were on standby and attended to the Captain, who was safely escorted off the aircraft and received medical attention. Passengers disembarked as usual after the plane was towed to its designated parking area. FlySafair stated that passengers remained calm throughout the incident, and the situation was handled smoothly.
