FlySafair’s flight FA678, departing from Lanseria International Airport and bound for Durban, was forced to make an emergency landing at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday morning after striking a bird during takeoff.

Emergency Diversion to OR Tambo

The scheduled 9:40 am flight, expected to land at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport by 10:55 am, faced technical difficulties with its second engine. About 30 minutes into the flight, the captain informed passengers about the need to reroute for safety reasons.

FlySafair spokesperson Maryke Pienaar confirmed the emergency landing, stating:

“The aircraft landed safely, and we’ve moved passengers onto a new aircraft to resume their journey to Durban. ETA in Durban is 12:45 pm. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, as the team prioritise safety.” Pienaar told IOL Travel

Passengers waited at OR Tambo International Airport for approximately an hour before boarding another aircraft to continue their journey.

Bird Strikes: A Common Aviation Challenge

Bird strikes, while not uncommon, can pose significant risks to aircraft. Larger birds or flocks can cause severe damage, such as engine failure or compromised critical components like windshields and wings.

Although most incidents are minor, history has shown the potential dangers. One of the most notable cases was the “Miracle on the Hudson” in 2009, where a US Airways flight made an emergency water landing after bird strikes disabled both engines. Fortunately, the quick actions of the crew ensured no fatalities, though a few passengers sustained minor injuries.

FlySafair’s Preparedness

Pienaar assured the public of FlySafair’s readiness to handle such situations:

“Our pilots are well-trained to manage bird strike incidents safely.” He tolod IOL Travel

While such events are rare, this incident highlights the importance of robust safety protocols and skilled aviation professionals in safeguarding passengers and crew.

Safety Above All

FlySafair’s swift response ensured that passengers of flight FA678 continued their journey with minimal delays and no reported injuries. The airline’s dedication to safety underscores its commitment to protecting travelers even in unforeseen circumstances.
