Nine-Hour Blackouts Scheduled for Soweto as Eskom Upgrades Grid

Parts of Soweto in Johannesburg will face a planned nine-hour electricity outage on Tuesday, 22 April, as Eskom conducts critical maintenance on its distribution network.
The outage, set to affect Moletsane and Tladi from 08:30 to 18:00, forms part of Eskom’s province-wide maintenance programme aimed at improving service reliability.
Second outage scheduled for Wednesday
Eskom has also announced a second power cut in Jabulani on Wednesday, 23 April, during the same hours. These scheduled interruptions are part of routine upgrades to ensure the safety and efficiency of the province’s electricity supply infrastructure.
“Maintenance is necessary to ensure the safety, reliability and efficiency of the electricity supply,” Eskom said in a statement, adding that the work is part of its ongoing efforts across Gauteng.
Safety warning for affected residents
The utility has urged residents to treat all electrical appliances as live during the outage window, warning that supply could return unexpectedly.
Eskom also noted that the maintenance might be postponed if unforeseen circumstances arise. “We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the power utility added.
