Eskom has reduced load shedding to Stage 2 after successfully restoring several power-generating units that unexpectedly failed over the weekend. The power utility announced the adjustment early Tuesday morning, following significant progress in bringing lost capacity back online.

The crisis began on Saturday when a unit failure at Majuba power station in Mpumalanga triggered disruptions at Medupi in Limpopo, removing 800MW from the grid. The situation worsened on Sunday when four units at Camden power station shut down due to a hydraulic valve failure, forcing an escalation to Stage 6.

By Monday, Eskom had managed to recover most of the lost capacity, initially reducing load shedding to Stage 4. Later that evening, the utility reported further improvements, with eight of the ten affected units restored and an additional 1,146MW expected to be available overnight.

Eskom cautioned that while emergency reserves were being replenished, they had not yet reached optimal levels. A further update on the power situation is expected later on Tuesday.

This marks the first major load shedding event since January, following nearly 10 months of uninterrupted electricity supply.
