Massive 28-Car Pileup in Ekurhuleni Leaves Two Seriously Injured

A tragic 28-car pileup on the N12 West in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni, left two people severely injured and caused significant traffic disruptions. Authorities are investigating the incident, which occurred on Tuesday.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) confirmed that two drivers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate medical care. In addition, eight other motorists suffered minor injuries.
“Ekurhuleni officials have launched an investigation into reckless driving, and a case has been opened at Bedfordview SAPS,” said EMPD spokesperson Ann Makgatho. “The N12 is still closed as we continue the cleanup and investigation efforts.”
Authorities have advised motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes to bypass the ongoing operation.
This pileup comes just a month after a deadly bus crash on the R21 near OR Tambo International Airport. The crash resulted in 14 fatalities and 77 injuries. Mayor Doctor Xhakaza of Ekurhuleni stated that a “sudden braking” incident might have led to the horrific bus crash. However, further investigations are underway to verify this assessment.
“The City of Ekurhuleni is offering assistance to the families impacted by this tragic accident,” Xhakaza added.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Action
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed that the bus driver, who was seriously injured, is receiving treatment at Edenvale Hospital. Investigators are examining footage from Sanral CCTV cameras to identify other contributing factors.
“Further details will be included in the final crash report, which will be forwarded to the police and the Director of Public Prosecutions,” Zwane stated.
Both President Cyril Ramaphosa and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi have expressed their condolences to the families of those who died in the bus crash.
