EFF Demands Accountability in Minister McKenzie’s R800,000 Paris Controversy
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have expressed approval for the Public Protector’s decision to investigate Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie for alleged misuse of public funds during a seven-day trip to Paris for the 2024 Olympics.
Investigation Sparks Transparency Push
EFF MP Sinawo Tambo filed a complaint, accusing McKenzie of spending over R800,000 of public funds. This prompted the Public Protector to launch a probe into possible violations of the Executive Members’ Ethics Act and Code.
According to records, McKenzie’s expenses included:
- Flights: R215,976.36
- Ground transport: R454,005.00
- Accommodation: R113,271.00
- Subsistence allowance: R20,745.72
EFF Calls for Accountability
EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys criticized McKenzie’s initial denial of his Olympic attendance and later admission, labeling it symptomatic of government dishonesty. Mathys stated:
“This wasteful expenditure reflects a blatant disregard for public accountability amidst the socio-economic crises faced by the nation.”
The inquiry will examine potential misuse of funds, ethics violations, and whether McKenzie’s actions contradicted his constitutional duties. The Public Protector has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation despite time constraints.
The EFF committed to monitoring the investigation closely and supporting efforts for transparency. Mathys concluded,
“Public resources must serve the people, not fund luxury trips for government officials.”
The investigation is seen as a critical step towards ensuring public officials prioritize ethical governance and responsible spending.
