Wet Weather Set to Dampen South Africa’s Easter Weekend

Published

on

Holidaymakers heading out this Easter weekend may face delays as wet weather continues to sweep across several provinces. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of possible downpours and thunderstorms, urging the public to remain cautious.

On Wednesday, heavy rain and storms battered parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern Eastern Cape, prompting a Level 2 weather alert for the Wild Coast and southern KZN. Although conditions are expected to ease slightly on Thursday, more rain is still on the cards.

Weekend rain outlook by region

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and coastal parts of the Eastern Cape and KZN. While drier weather is expected in the western regions, inland provinces like Gauteng, the Free State, and North West may still see some rain.

From 18 to 19 April, SAWS predicts a 30% chance of rainfall in the central and north-eastern parts of the country. But the weekend may bring heavier downpours, with a surface and upper-air trough expected to affect large parts of the interior.

The Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape, and the Garden Route are likely to experience widespread rainfall between 20 and 21 April, with a 30% to 60% chance of showers. The southern Drakensberg may be hardest hit.

Authorities have warned of potential flooding in low-lying areas, especially in regions that experience persistent rainfall. Travellers are urged to monitor weather updates and take extra precautions on the roads.
